Term 3 holidays

In the first week I went to a vex robotics holiday program which was epic because my team built a really cool robot that scooped up the balls and put them in the cage in the back.In the second week I went docking with my cousins on the lease.

Week 5 procedure writing

How to make colourful
homemade candles

Materials:Wax,Wicks(one for every candle you make), crayons(any colour you prefer),popsicle stick(to stir),a paper cup and a glass

Firstly The first step is to peel the paper off your crayons. You can either use a knife or soak the crayons in water for easy peeling.

Secondly, fill a paper cup with wax and microwave for 1 minute. Give it a stir and microwave again in 30-second intervals until wax is completely melted.

Thirdly, pour a thin layer of wax into the bottom of each glass and place the wick in the center leave it to harden for a while.

Fourthly using one crayon per colour, fill a paper cup with wax and top with a broken up crayon. Microwave for 2 minutes and then in 30 second intervals until completely liquid. Let cool for 30 seconds or so and pour coloured wax into the glass. Let the first layer dry for 20-30 minutes.

Fifthly repeat step four until colours are up to the top of the glass remember to let them dry in between layers.

Sixthly light and enjoy!
(This it what the end product should look like or similar)

My holiday in New Plymouth

For the holidays I went to New Plymouth and here are some photos

Robo cam 2.0

For integration we had to come up with a product that is not currently available on market so we came up with based on the idea of swivel (above) to make available for to put wheels on on it and make it go up in the air on Pistons.

My highlight of the term

My highlight of the term was the VEX research here is part of it:

Dear Mr Kennedy and Miss Holder,

Kids and Teachers at CSNS have discovered an awesome building toy called Vex. This letter is to persuade you to give us $400 so we can buy the Vex super kit and the Competition   Add on kit so we can set up a Robotics club.

What is VEX?

VEX is a building toy, like Lego, but with a twist. It’s a robotics kit! Pretty similar to Lego Mindstorms EV3 you build creations with motors and a computer so they become working robots.

Why do we want VEX for School?

VEX will help us understand complicated mechanisms and help us design future creations, similar to this Gumball machine which Ben (A member of our group) Designed and built. This skill is very handy because at CSNS we don't get taught that often, and this will help us later on in life if we want to be engineers. You would need to problem solve to manage to build a working robot It will also help people if they want to be computer programmers, because you program the robot brain.

Is Vex Good Quality?

If you are wondering "Should I give us the money or not because Vex might be poor quality?" Then we have the answer for you.

We have researched the two most popular Robotics kits “VEX” and “EV3”. If you search "Vex Vs EV3" you get awesome comparisons, and they turn out pretty much the same quality, however VEX is a lot cheaper.

What We Will Do With VEX  With VEX we will build some awesome mechanisms, and in the end we will enter a VEX competition where robots battle in tasks such as this VEX challenge video.  We might even build a Rubik's Cube Solver!!!

Survey:

We did a survey and asked 31 kids, a mix of boys and girls mostly year 6 but a few year 5s, and 99.58% of Boys said they would  learn with Vex, and 90% girls said they would learn with it.

What we want:

We only want 2 packs, the The Vex Super Kit and the Vex Competition Add-on Kit. Altogether it's only $400, so we are hoping you can give us the money!

Here is a presentation for evidence showing some complicated mechanisms we have made before.

If you need more info please contact us in GRi11. We look forward to hearing from you with your response.

Yours sincerely

Saturn info report

Saturn

My prior knowledge:

Saturn is the second biggest planet in the solar system.

Saturn is one of the 3 gas giants(Uranus,Saturn and Neptune).

Saturn has many moons

It has rings made of rock and ice

My questions:

Why does Saturn have rings?

What is the climate like on Saturn hot or cold?

Can you stand on the surface or will you fall through?

How long is its orbit?

Who found Saturn?

What's Saturn  radius?

How many moons does it have?

Saturn was first spotted in 1610 by Galileo Galilei shortly after he had built his telescope.Saturn is mainly made up of hydrogen and helium and gets hotter the deeper you go in it but there is no physical surface.

Saturn rings which are the main feature are slightly less than 15 km thick it is though they are made up of small rocks ice and dust all almost orbiting Saturn as if Saturn is a Sun!

Saturn's average climate is -178 degrees Celsius so it is a cold planet.

Saturn compared to is only slightly smaller Jupiter is nearly the same but Jupiter is the king of the cosmos.Saturn's rings appear moving but it's not the planet orbiting  it's the solar wind getting up to 1800 km an hour! That's the force of a hurricane wind✖️18. Saturn is the lightest planet in our solar system it is even lighter than water.

Argument Writing

Dear Mr Kennedy

I think that kids in GRi11 should be able to manage their own learning to  prepare for intermediate and high school.

we should be able to work where ever we want because if you're stuck with someone annoying you can't move somewhere and you will get distracted and not finish your work.

You can also work in groups and share your work and thinking with others. Some people like to work at desks and some like to work under desks so if we are allowed to sit where ever we want and people will be be happy.

If you walk around GRI11 there will be people working everywhere and they are all on task.

Yours sincerely Matty
